Make Your Dog Walk Nicely on a Leash
Regardless of whether your dog is a puppy or an adult, it should be able to walk nicely on a leash. If it can’t do it, then it has to learn, and i’ll come up with a few tricks for that here.
If your dog is a puppy, make sure its collar is soft. Then it is not so violent for the small dog. The size of the collar should not be too large, regardless of whether it is a puppy or an adult dog. There must be space for approx. 2 fingers between the collar and the dog’s neck, then the collar is neither too tight nor too loose, so the dog can free himself by pulling his head back.
The line you use for the dog must fit the size. Be careful not to walk a small dog or puppy with a large and heavy lead. Here you have to sacrifice what it costs to have a leash that fits your dog’s size. The line must also not be too long or short. The dog must be able to walk freely, so the leash must not be too short. But also not so long that the dog gets entangled in it.
Now we have to go out delta market. If the dog does not want to go along and stays standing or pulls backwards, you can try to lure it forward with a treat. Always have treats with you when teaching your dog to walk.
Have the dog on your left side and hold the leash in your left hand as well. Make sure to keep the leash slack so the dog can walk on its own. The dog must learn that it must follow you and only you. Therefore, it must have its full attention on you. Therefore, take a few small treats in your right hand and make it clear to the dog that you have them in your hand.
Now make sure to move forward at a nice pace, not too slow or fast. The dog should now follow you nicely on your left side, without running forward or lagging behind. When the dog has walked a fair bit, and before it loses focus on you, you give it a treat. Give the treat with your right hand, directly into the dog’s mouth, so you don’t have to stop and grab it. But it just has to go fast. Now go ahead and continue to give treats at regular intervals when the dog walks nicely.
If the dog loses its attention on you, you must say no! Or add! Hard and cash for it. You can reinforce it by a hard tug on the line. Be careful not to keep pulling, but a quick jerk so that the dog focuses on you again. As soon as the dog focuses on you again, you praise it by saying giving a treat.
Continue this training daily and preferably several times a day. Then the dog will have to learn it. Over time, you can taper off the treats a little, and eventually go without treats. That is the goal. May you and your dog get some good walks.
